Taipei Main Station, Ximending or Zhongshan? Choose the Right Taipei Base
Compare Taipei Main Station, Ximending and Zhongshan for transport, evenings, airport access and neighborhood feel before choosing where to stay.

Choose Taipei Main Station for onward travel, Ximending for busy evenings, or Zhongshan for the most balanced neighborhood base. All three put you on two Taipei Metro lines. The useful difference is what surrounds the hotel—and how often you need the airport, Taiwan Railways or high-speed rail.
The quick decision
| Stay near | Best fit | Main advantage | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taipei Main Station | Short stays, early trains and rail-heavy itineraries | Taipei Metro, Taiwan Railways and THSR meet in the station area; Airport MRT A1 is nearby | The large, multi-level transport district can take time to navigate |
| Ximending | Shopping, street activity and easy evenings | A pedestrian entertainment district outside the hotel | The busiest blocks can feel crowded and may be a poor fit for travelers seeking calm |
| Zhongshan | Cafes, small shops, culture and a balanced first visit | Two metro lines plus an appealing walking area toward Shuanglian | Airport and intercity trains require a connection through Taipei Main Station |
If your itinerary is mainly within Taipei, Zhongshan is our default recommendation. Pick Ximending when its bustle is part of the appeal. Pick Taipei Main Station when reducing friction on arrival, departure or rail day trips matters more than the immediate street atmosphere.
Taipei Main Station: best for onward connections
Taipei Main Station is the practical base for a transport-heavy trip. Its Taipei Metro station, R10/BL12, serves the Red and Blue lines. The operator’s station information shows eight M-numbered exits, several underground levels and different elevator routes—useful evidence of how extensive the complex is (Taipei Metro).
Taiwan High Speed Rail and Taiwan Railways also use Taipei Station. THSR’s station guide shows internal corridors between its ticket-gate areas and the Taiwan Railways station (THSR). This makes the area especially useful for early departures or several trips beyond Taipei.
The Airport MRT uses A1 Taipei Main Station, a separate nearby station rather than a Taipei Metro platform. From Taoyuan Airport Terminal 1, the express train is scheduled to take 35 minutes to A1 and the all-stops commuter train 50 minutes; Terminal 2 to A1 takes 38 minutes by express (Taipei Travel).
A1 also offers same-day in-town check-in from 6am to 9.30pm for listed China Airlines, Mandarin Airlines, EVA Air, UNI Air, Cathay Pacific and STARLUX flights. Taoyuan Metro says passengers must complete it at least three hours before departure and should check the airline’s restrictions (Taoyuan Metro). Verify eligibility before planning around the service.
Choose Taipei Main Station if you are:
- staying only one or two nights;
- taking early Taiwan Railways or high-speed rail services;
- planning several rail day trips;
- carrying luggage that makes repeated transfers undesirable; or
- prioritizing access to the Airport MRT.
The main booking trap is treating every hotel labelled “Taipei Main Station” as equally convenient. A property may be close to one side of the complex but less convenient for A1, THSR or a particular metro line. Map the walking route to the specific service you expect to use, not just to the station name.
Ximending: best for activity after dark
Ximending suits travelers who want shopping, casual food and street activity immediately outside. Taipei’s tourism office describes it as a youth-culture center associated with accessory shops, cosplay, street dancing and weekend promotional events (Taipei Travel). Ximen Station serves the Blue and Green lines, and Taipei Main Station is one stop away on the Blue line.
The area has more than contemporary retail. Beside Ximen Station, the Red House was built in 1908 as a public market and later served as a bookstore, cinema and theater. It now supports cultural and creative uses (Taipei Travel). Ximending also provides a natural starting point for exploring farther into Wanhua.
Choose Ximending if you want:
- a busy pedestrian district at the hotel door;
- plenty of casual eating and shopping options;
- activity into the evening; or
- direct access to both the Blue and Green metro corridors.
The compromise is intensity. If quiet matters, look beyond the core pedestrian lanes and read recent reviews for the exact room type; noise depends on the building and street, not simply the neighborhood name.
Ximending gives up little for travel within central Taipei, but Airport MRT, THSR and Taiwan Railways passengers must walk or transfer via Taipei Main Station. That is a modest inconvenience on one arrival and departure, but less attractive if the itinerary repeatedly leaves the city.
Zhongshan: the most balanced neighborhood base
For a trip focused mainly on Taipei, Zhongshan offers the strongest balance of connections and nearby places to wander. Zhongshan Station is the interchange between the Red and Green lines. The Red line runs one stop to Taipei Main Station and continues toward Dongmen and Taipei 101/World Trade Center; check the operator’s current route map and timetables for a particular journey.
The case for staying here is not just the interchange. The Zhongshan Station area extends north toward Shuanglian through Xinzhongshan Linear Park, incorporating a green corridor, plazas and the underground book street. Taipei’s tourism office also notes the creative shops and design studios in the surrounding lanes (Taipei Travel). Chifeng Street and the lanes around the park make this the easiest of the three areas for an unstructured cafe-and-shopping afternoon.
Cultural and evening options are close by. The Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei occupies a historic building formerly used as a school and Taipei City Hall (Taipei Travel). Ningxia Road Night Market, northwest of Zhongshan Station and near Shuanglian, adds an evening food destination; the city lists both stations among its nearby MRT options (Taipei Travel).
Choose Zhongshan if you want:
- a central base that is rewarding on foot;
- cafes, small shops, department stores and cultural venues nearby;
- two useful metro lines; or
- evening choices without staying in Ximending’s core pedestrian district.
The drawback is straightforward: Zhongshan is one metro stop from Taipei Main Station, but Airport MRT, THSR and Taiwan Railways still require the connection and navigation through the main-station area.
Here, “Zhongshan” means the area around MRT Zhongshan Station and north toward Shuanglian, not the whole of Zhongshan District. A hotel elsewhere in the district can have a very different transport pattern.
Check the exact hotel block before booking
Once you have chosen an area, the precise location can matter more than a small difference in review score.
- Find the nearest station entrance. Taipei Main Station has several systems and a broad underground footprint.
- Map the route with luggage. Check major road crossings, stairs and elevator access. Taipei Metro’s station pages identify exit facilities; at Taipei Main Station, only some M exits list elevators (Taipei Metro).
- Read recent noise comments for the room type. This is particularly useful around Ximending’s busiest lanes.
- Count your trips beyond Taipei. Frequent use of THSR or Taiwan Railways strengthens the case for Taipei Main Station; a city-focused itinerary favors Zhongshan or Ximending.
- Compare hotels directly. Room size, building condition and the exact street vary within all three areas, so the neighborhood name alone cannot settle value.
Which area fits your itinerary?
- Book Taipei Main Station for the easiest intercity rail and Airport MRT logistics.
- Book Ximending when lively pedestrian streets, food and shopping should start at the hotel door.
- Book Zhongshan for the best overall blend of metro access and a neighborhood worth exploring on foot.
For a typical first visit spent mostly in Taipei, Zhongshan is the most balanced choice. Ximending is better if you actively want its energy; Taipei Main Station is better when the station complex is central to the itinerary.
